Southeast Asia/Kenya : Day 29 : Camera Troubles

Three dives yesterday. Two in the afternoon and one night dive. Unfortunately my camera has been giving me problems. The flash isn’t firing when it’s supposed to, and when it does it can be too bright and wash out a scene.

For example, here are three shots all of the same nudibranch.

We only see light coming from the left. That’s the camera’s built-in flash. It doesn’t have enough power to light the scene. What’s supposed to happen is the light from that flash is sent through a fiber-optic cable to my large flash, telling the large flash to trigger. In this case it didn’t.

This time the big flash did go off. But it’s way too overpowering. The signal to trigger the flash worked, but the signal to stop the flash did not.

On the third try it came out much more balanced, though this time a touch darker than ideal.

Luckily all three pictures captured details and didn’t over- or underexpose the image. So with a little photo editing it can be made to look good.

The center of the image is better lit than the edge because the flash I have isn’t powerful enough to light the whole thing equally. So one crop later…

Not too bad. Would be better if I had gotten closer so we could see more, but I was testing my flash.

I’ll probably take a lot of photos of the apartment I’m staying in as I try to figure out what’s going on. My two theories are: (1) rechargeable batteries are failing and (2) fiber-optic cable is either bad or not properly connected.
