Spain/Austria 2024 : Day 13 : Figaro!

Danube in the morning.

The old-world side looks like expected.

The new world side is boring.

Been seeing these clusters of stripes here and there. Took a minute to think about them, and follow them, and see that they must be to help visually impaired people find their way around. Subtle, simple, cool.

Walk home through an amusement park. No I didn’t ride any rides.

Then, this evening, the opera! Had some issues getting there. Roads were closed so my tram went to a different place than I expected. I finally quit trying to figure out pubic transport and walked. Thirteen minutes and still got there early.

The entrance to my box. Someone was sitting in my seat. An older woman who spoke english, thankfully, but didn’t know how to read her tickets. So we went searching for some staff to help. She thought they had sold us both the same seat. They didn’t. She just sat in the wrong one.

Theater was packed. Acoustics were great. No microphones, just singers singing loudly! The little display in front of me had the lyrics in English. Each seat had a display with the option of German, English, and Italian.

Music was good. Voices were good. Production and direction were bad. No props. Hand gestures miming real things. No sets, just weird colored banners floating around in the background. They have some photos giving an idea of what I mean on their website. I grabbed one here:

Have to pack tomorrow. I messaged with the airline and because I booked through United and not Austrian Airlines, I can’t do any upgrades online. I have to hope something is available at check-in — or when I get to the airport Sunday. Fortunately it looks like a lot of the seats are currently empty. Maybe I can stretch out in an empty row in economy.
