Everyone told the truth: Zakynthos looks nothing like the other islands. It looks more like Athens than the Cyclades.

Also as promised: trees!

Multi-colored buildings.

And, of course, ocean.

I did a little walking in the early afternoon. It didn’t feel very touristy. Some gift shops, but plenty of hardware stores, and grocery stores, and people working at desks. I’ll have to find out how much of the population stays on the island in the winter, but it sure felt like this was a more permanent town.

Stopped at the post office (the wait was too long so I didn’t stick around).

In the evening, I found the bus station. The routes and timetables are terrible. I’ll give it a try this weekend, but I predict a vehicle rental in my future.

Then walked back down to the port. See that land mass in the distance? That’s not just some other island. That’s mainland Greece. So close!

The main square. I think. At least, it’s a square and has a big green patch on Google maps.

Then back to the water as the sun set.
