Two dives completed; two certifications achieved. I got down to 30.0 meters on the first dive with no signs of gas narcosis. On the second I dove with Nitrox while the instructor dove with regular air so we could compare our dive computers. The enriched gas mixture gave me nearly twice as much time available on the bottom as he had.
While reviewing my dive data, I started wondering about my gas consumption. I am definitely doing better. I can stay down much longer than even a week ago, but there’s surely room for improvement.
But first (because I’ve decided to post graphs) a snapshot of the dive shop’s mascot.

I pulled the average surface consumption rate for all my dives in Greece.

Definitely improving! The data are normalized for surface pressures. At depth you breath more air each breath, but the computer adjusts for if you had been on the surface.
Then I looked at my deep dive from today.

The shaded area is depth, the line is surface consumption, time moves left to right, and the y-axis is oriented to be interesting not consistent for the two datasets.
Interesting.
I used a LOT of air descending. The first 5 minutes make it look like I have no idea what I’m doing. Maybe it’s just nerves from my first deep dive?
Let’s look at a shallow dive.

Interesting.
Same drop at the beginning. I’m going to have to pay attention to that the next time I dive. I know I have a mixture of anxiety and excitement at the beginning, but I never would have guessed I used so much air.
See? Much more interesting than more pictures of fish being eaten!
My next dive (next weekend, in Santorini) will be recreational so I’ll take my GoPro down.
