Greece : Day 22 : Naxos

The wind died down enough for the ferries to run, so I made it to Naxos. I booked the ferry, but no accommodations, in case something went wrong and I needed to cancel again. The ferry is cheap, Airbnbs less so.

My ferry left at 11:45, so I had time to go to the port authority and get documentation about yesterday’s cancellation.

Got a chai and muffin at Mikel, the only place in Greece that has chai.

Then onto the ferry. The seas were choppy, but that meant rainbows in the spray.

I wasn’t the only one heading to Naxos today.

Greece2019-3140

Turn left immediately at the end of the dock, then up a hill to the Temple of Apollo.

Greece2019-3146

I walked around a little bit, getting an idea of where I wanted to take pictures from when I came back in the evening.

Then lunch. Fresh swordfish.

Greece2019-3159

While eating, I booked an Airbnb. It didn’t say “ocean view,” but it probably could have. Ha!

Greece2019-3161

A few hours separated me from sunset, so I walked and took random pictures of the area.

Then around the harbor to the far side with a lot of surf…

Greece2019-8338

…and a great view of the town

Greece2019-8317

As the sun started to set, I climbed back up the hill for some photos of Apollo’s Temple.

Greece2019-8356

And of the town.

Greece2019-8372

And of the town and Apollo’s Temple.

Greece2019-8388

The sun set over a departing ferry.

Greece2019-8411

I stayed until it was pitch black. My hope was to take some photos with the Milky Way in the background. Sadly the wind made it nearly impossible to keep my little tripod steady long enough to get a sharp capture of the stars, and the lights that illuminate the ruins over exposed the entire frame. Oh well. It was still nice.

Greece2019-3211

Then back to my room. Although still full from lunch, I am unable to pass up a gyro pita.

Greece2019-3214

Successful day. I’d say it makes up for yesterday. I only visited Naxos for a day, but could tell the number of people definitely exceeded that in Paros. I look forward to the smaller crowds.
