Greece : Day 6 : Diving

I’m tired.

Got two dives in: one 32 minutes the other 42.

Step one, get all my gear…

…into my dive bag.

Taxi down to the dive shop where we planned to meet at 9:30.

There wasn’t much of a timetable, and they had a lot to do, so we didn’t end up getting to the dive site until nearly noon.

It’s called the Second Limanaki Vouliagmeni, south of Athens about 30 km (19 miles) along the western coast. It was full of swimmers and cliff divers, and had a bar along the shore. We didn’t spend any time on that. We were there to dive.

It was a private dive, just one of the shop’s instructors and me. Expensive, but a good way to remember what I’m supposed to be doing under there. He took my GoPro and did all the photography. So there are lots of pictures and videos of me.

As well as a few other creatures.

The visibility was great, we could see forever. Although forever in the ocean is just… blue.

There’s a giant hole in the middle of all this called the Devil’s Hole. One description says it has “treacherous currents and eerie atmosphere.” We didn’t go down, but did swim over and around it. It really is just a big black hole in the bottom of the ocean.

After the two dives, we went back to the shop, cleaned off all the salt, and chatted for a bit. As I explained my plans for the next two months, we agreed I’d come back and dive with them when I’m back in Athens so they can see how much I’ve improved! (I really need to work on taking fewer breaths — I went through my air twice as fast as the Instructor.)

Pork souvlaki for dinner from a different nearby place. I intended to update my dive log as I sat there and ate, but I don’t know how to use my dive computer well enough yet.

So I went back to the Airbnb, did a sync with my computer, and everything got much easier.

A few texts with my next Airbnb host to coordinate Sunday, a little searching for ferry schedules, and now I’m done. Lots of sun plus an hour and a half of activity, and I’m exhausted!
