Alaska : Day 4 : Whittier

Whittier, Alaska. The smallest place on earth, with a giant cruise ship in dock.

That was a surprise! Apparently this is one of the stops for Princess Cruises. Very few people got off and wandered into the town. Most either stayed on board or got on busses and trains out of town. I don’t quite understand why it stops here.

Spent a few hours exploring first thing in the morning. Only us and a few residents grumpily walking their dogs. (They also reminded us to watch out for bears!)

Getting from one side of town to the other requires crossing railroad tracks. Crossing UNDER.

Alaska2019-1816

Getting outside of the tourist section (blocks) and into the residential section (also just a few blocks), we see where boats go when they’re no longer wanted.

The most important thing I learned was what to do with an old school bus.

Alaska2019-1805

The day was overcast, and the mountain tops obscured.

Alaska2019-6981

The perfect weather for getting in a kayak. No sunburn. No overheating as our tiered arms tried to make us move faster than the current tried to push us back.

Lunch when we got back, then a hike along a glacial melt river. Such loud rapids!

And so much debris from some sort of trolly system that used to be here.

Alaska2019-1815

A Bald Eagle nest has been here for 10 years. It’s easy to see, but so far away it’s hard to photograph. So we went looking for a spot for tomorrow. With some cropping and editing, it starts to look good.

Alaska2019-7007

Now we’re taking a break, letting our sore muscles relax, before dinner and bed. Tomorrow we head out to Portage Glacier.
