Australia : Day 21 : Back to Sydney

The first step of the long walk home. 2:20 flight. Then into Sydney for a night of chips with chicken salt, and repacking. Sleep. It’s all gone so fast.

How about a few differences between the U.S. and Australia?

We’ll start with a couple phrases. You’ll see some borrowed from British English, and others from, well, who knows. Near as I can tell, the Australian to American English dictionary should begin with these:

  • Lemonade -> Sprite or 7-Up
  • Hire -> Rent
  • Nappy -> Diaper
  • Pram -> Stroller
  • Buzzer -> Garage Door Opener
  • Trolly -> Cart
  • Bottelo -> Liquor Store
  • Servo -> Service Station
  • Lolly -> Candy (excluding hard candies)

Light switches differ as well, in two respects. You click them down to turn them on, and they’re more toggles than switches as we’d define them:

Power sockets are differently shaped, no big surprise, but in addition, they all have a switch above them to turn the socket on and off. When I said we just have ours hot all the time I got looks of bewilderment. I’m still not entirely clear why.

Now on to that repacking.
